A husband, father, teacher, and amateur photographer trying to live the best possible life right where I am.

Calvin: “No, I’m waiting for inspiration. You can’t turn on creativity like a faucet. You have to be in the right mood.”
Hobbes: “What mood is that?”

Hi Laurens. I would love to use your still life work as an example in class. I’m a graduate student in photography at Ohio University. I’m trying to find your bio somewhere but can’t seem to locate one. Would you mind if I used some of your photos to present in class and if not, could you direct me to your bio? Thanks, Sallie

Hi, Sallie. Thanks for the interest in my photos. I don’t have a bio anywhere (because I am a hobbyist I don’t really think I am all that important in the photography world). I am in my mid-40s, happily married, father of a daughter and son, my profession is a teacher. This is my tenth year living in northwestern Ontario, Canada (last place of residence was Toronto). I started taking an interest in digital photography a number of years ago when my daughter was born. I just muddle through with my photography (I am self-taught). Is there anything else you would like to know? You may use my images, but only in the presentation (I sell some images exclusively through 500px.com). All the best on your project! Laurens.

Thanks for your response! Of course I would only use your images for my short class presentation. How do you light your studio food stuff? Could you give just a basic overview? And what inspired you to shoot fruit? Is it seltzer water that makes the bubbles?

I use natural light, sometimes with a reflector off to the side to fill in shadows. I could never get the hang of using off camera flash. The fruit became a personal project as a result of my first fruit image being published (an orange). The orange picture was part of a themed challenge on the colour orange. I just experimented with a very small aquarium and soda water. One of my other fruit images was published in National Geographic, of which I was surprised and honoured. My fifteen minutes of fame (haha!). Thanks for your interest. I hope your project and course work go well! All the best!

Hi. Sorry to jump on this thread but I’ve recently enrolled on a photography course and my first assignment is to do with Still Life. I came across your pictures in this category and was immediately inspired to use yourself as one of my featured photographers if that’s okay with you. In particular I love the Kaleidoscope one you did with the three glasses, what inspired you to take that picture?

Hi again. Thanks for your reply Laurens. If it is still possible could you tell me the f stop, shutter speed and iso you used for the three glasses kaleidoscope photograph please as I’d like to use that as one if my examples if that’s okay.

Do you have a favourite photographer or someone that inspires you or that inspires you?

Hi Judy,
I follow a few photographers here and there, such as Dina Belenko and Pim Leijen, but for the most part just find my own way. I participate on 500px and National Geographic’s Your Shot, where I am often inspired by other photographer’s work.
